Consider a device that was invented two decades before being overtaken in usage by a similar miniature-size device invented just a decade ago. Don’t get addled by the sentence but it’s true. That’s how revolutionary is the impact of mobile on the users. Usage of the internet has also reached great heights during the past five years or so.
Smartphone technology which was just introduced a decade ago has revolutionized internet technology offering high-speed 4G connectivity. Based on this, it is true that desktops are taking a back seat among users in India. Mobiles are offering various features which we could just have seen on the desktop before their invention. Consider as an example a pdf reader, music player, and whatnot. Mobile is, in fact, a mini-computer in the pocket of the consumer.
In fact, most of the internet traffic-78% comes from mobile and others from desktop. India even leads the mobile usage in the G20 nations. Indians are so dependent on mobile that they have even surpassed USA and UK, whose average mobile consumption is 42% and 44% respectively. So, what helped mobile create such a huge impact amongst consumers? There are considerable similarities and differences between mobile and Desktop experience:-
Both Desktop and mobile offer similar and user-friendly interfaces which help them to get the desired task done.
Mobiles are easier to carry than desktops. Also, the content is easy to read in any crowded place on mobile than on a desktop.
Mobiles are used for reading and responding to quick emails while desktops are used to respond to many business-level emails which are craftier and lengthy.
Taking a photo is easy on a mobile device than on a desktop. Also due to the internet boom, they can be easily shared via mobile devices. Also, the person can listen to music on the go.
I Wonder, if you missed any notification on the desktop just because it was not on. This is not the case with mobile devices as we can get notifications throughout the day as the mobile is always on and reliable.
Mobiles are also used for GPS which is tough to accomplish with the help of a desktop. Even major tech giants are now focussing on mobile-based technologies to get profit from this modern trend. Flipkart and other e-commerce companies have even shifted to app-based services to gain benefits from growing mobile users in India.
The world is shifting to the “Internet of Things” and mobiles will be a crucial part of the implementation of this. Smartphones have also become affordable with the Chinese manufacturing companies coming to the market with a better user interface, bigger screens, powerful processing, and huge marketing strategies.
Even though mobile usage is still high, the desktop is still used for many big transactions and important business sessions. Also, the study has recently shown that 8.52% of desktop users add to the cart and 2.78% get converted to sales. While for mobile, 4.70% of mobile users add to the cart and 0.8% get converted to sales.
Though mobile is overtaking desktop users in the Indian market, the trust of the consumer will still be there on desktops and Tech giants have to work on technologies so that both work in unison to give consumers the best user experience.
